Spot of Culture: John P Holdren loves...

Scientists who are changing the way we understand the world tell CultureLab their favourite places to seek inspiration and reflect

rexfeatures_823801a.jpgJohn P. Holdren has a long list of favourite venues, including the British Museum in London, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley, California, and the Boston Museum of Science. But at the very top is the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington DC. What sets it apart, he says, is "its remarkably eclectic and evocative exhibits covering the co-evolution of the scientific, technological, economic, social and cultural aspects of this country's story, right up to the present".

Are large legal publishers shooting themselves in the foot when it ...

Attorney and media consultant, Bob Ambrogi, has a post this morning reviewing Thomson Reuters new site covering the Supreme Court?s 2011-2012 term, called Case by Case: The U.S. Supreme Court. The site is part of Thomson Reuters' (owner of Westlaw) push into enhanced legal coverage through the web.

Bottom line Ambrogi says if you want snappy visuals the Thomson Reuters site is for you, but if you are looking for substantive information, look elsewhere.

The site uses interactive graphical tools to help users find information about the court, the justices and the cases, with links to analytical and legal materials, including motions, briefs and opinions. While the graphical elements hold the promise of being useful, the site?s usefulness is quickly lost for anyone who does not have a Westlaw subscription.
......

...Although the site provides links to briefs, decisions and various other documents, all links lead to Westlaw. If you want to see the petitioner?s brief in a case, you?ll need a Westlaw subscription. If you want to see the court?s decision in a case, you?ll need a Westlaw subscription.

......

If any of this were content proprietary to Westlaw, I might understand this set up. But many if not most of these documents are publicly available online. The Supreme Court?s opinions are available directly from the court itself, as well as from any number of other sites. Briefs are available from the American Bar Association?s stellar site, Preview of United States Supreme Court Cases. All sorts of background and commentary are available from the preeminent Supreme Court source, SCOTUSblog.

Joe Hodnicki, an excellent blogger at Law Librarian Blog, described the site as "...[A]nother corporate avenue to promote subscribing to Westlaw to access cited content.?

Thomson Reuters may not be alone in this tease and up sell approach.

I've been watching Wolter Kluwers, another of the large legal publishers, approach to new media. They have a number of blogs such as the Kluwer Patent Blog and the Kluwer Arbitration Blog.

The contributors appear to be lawyers and scholars that have historically written for Wolter Kluwers publications. Though the content may be of substance, there is little engagement on the author's part (something it takes to be a good blogger) and I don't see their bloggers or blogs cited on other blogs by the legal community as a whole nor the content being shared via social media ala Twitter and LinkedIn.

On the top of each blog is a bold link to 'Related Sites.' The related sites appear to lead to resources which require a subscription to Wolter Kluwer resources.

From one of Wolter Kluwer's sites I was drawn to a "Manual IP iPad app," which complements KluwerManualIP.com, an online version of their Manual for the Handling of Applications for Patents, Designs and Trademarks.

The app is little more than bulleted news headlines, which when clicked on takes you to a page where you can begin a free trial subscription of Kluwer's Manual IP.

I don't begrudge Thomson Reuters/Westlaw or Wolter Kluwers for wanting to sell subscriptions to their services. But to get into the blogging, new media, and app game as a fox in sheep's clothing is likely to backfire.

Current subscribers may find the new forms of access helpful, but such an approach can turn off the legal community as a whole and do more harm than good to your brand.

Hodnicki and Ambrogi are heavy hitters when it comes to influencing the legal community. Getting them to belittle your product and imply it's a scam to get lawyers to pay is not something you want to do. Unlike info from your new site or resource, Hodnicki's and Ambrogi's views are being sited and shared across the Internet.

A better approach for large legal publishers may be to support, sponsor, or partner with new media publishers who have figured out, through trial and error, how blogging and social media work.

Look at SCOTUSblog. It was started in 2003 by Attorney Tom Goldstein, before he had even made a name for himself as an advocate before the Supreme Court of the United States. Goldstein poured his heart and soul into providing a free and valuable resource on the Supreme Court.

Not only did SCOTUSblog become the most widely-read publication covering the Supreme Court, but it launched Goldstein's career.

Rather than launch a site competing with SCOTUSblog, Bloomberg Law entered into a an exclusive sponsorship of the blog this fall. From Bloomberg Law Chairman, Lou Andreozzi, former CEO of LexNexis:

SCOTUSblog?s comprehensive and impartial examination of the Supreme Court is an important public resource and Bloomberg Law is proud to support their ability to bring this content to the public, free of charge via the Web.

Large legal publishers would be well advised to take more of the Bloomberg approach.

First, though there's likely to be a role for professionally reported and edited legal news and information, you can simply not cover all the niches and nuances that practicing lawyers can cover via the power of blogging. With the growth of the net, blogging, and social networking, your subscribers expect and receiving information you cannot deliver.

Second, you don't understand blogging and social media. The time and money you'll put into it is not going to offer you the same return as partnering with new media legal publishers and harnessing the power of user generated content to complement your existing publications and reports.

SIM-LEI EV gets a video walk-through: shaped like a fish, has a big screen (video)

SIM-LEI
We got our first whiff of the SIM-LEI, an EV from across the Pacific, in March. Back then it was just an oddly shaped prototype with an impressive range of 207 miles and a top speed of 93mph. With the SIM-Drive's concept marching closer to a planned production date sometime in 2013 the company is finally giving a more detailed look at the car at the 2011 Electrical Vehicle Industrial Exhibition. The tapered, fish-like shape reduces drag, but the tiny coefficient of 0.91 couldn't be reached without shrinking the mirrors to their legal limit. The SIM-LEI compensates for the minuscule side and rear-view reflectors with a trio of cameras that feed video to the 19-inch (yes, we said 19-inch) monitor in the dashboard. Check out the video after the break for a complete tour of its advanced motoring tech.

Balloon Juice ? Newt Loves Pets ? and a Nice Embouchure

You?ve probably already heard about the idea that Gingrich will ?humanize? himself by ?Campaign[ing] With Pets and Music?:

Newt Gingrich?s campaign has decided to take another route on his bid to the Republican nomination: pets and music.

The campaign said today that it will soon launch a ?Pets With Newt? site aimed at Gingrich?s love for animals, intended to show a ?lighter side? of the candidate. ?As speaker I made it possible for people in public housing to keep their pets in 1988. I love pets so we?re going to have an entire project,? Gingrich said.

Gingrich doesn?t have any pets at this time, but he told ABC News today he and his wife Callista want a dog in the White House?

My emphasis. This is emotional tone-deafness on a scale approaching Romney-esque.

The campaign also plans to release a music education video starring Callista, who is a classically trained musician and signer. ?A music education video from my wife will be on the importance of music education and her background as a classical French horn player and a singer in the Basilica.?

The campaign?s approach is to show a fun side of the former Speaker of House and involve Callista more in the campaign.

?We?re going to do things that are interesting and positive and fun and try to get back the idea that you can have citizenship,? Gingrich said. ?Politics doesn?t have to be mean and nasty and disgusting. You can actually have fun as citizens working together.?

Yeaaah?he?s not giving up the Wingnut Welfare fallback career, which may be the only indication of intelligent foresight Newt?s shown recently. And speaking of ?mean and nasty and disgusting?, I do believe Mr. TBogg nails it:

... Callista Gingrich is the singularly least appealing First Lady-in-waiting to shuffle down the pike since probably Mary Todd Lincoln. I can?t honestly believe that Gingrich?s campaign people are on-board with making this botoxed trailer park Pamela Harriman a focal part of the campaign. This is all on Newt. Put aside the six-year adultery binge which is between Callista and her Catholic Jesus (who has his hands full enough as it is with priests treating altar boys like the entree line at the Golden Corral), there ?s not enough Vaseline in the world to soft-focus the lens and make Callista appear warm and fuzzy. As a trophy wife she?s more Third Place Runner-up material and Miss Congeniality she is most definitely not; Callista?s so brittle she makes Nancy Reagan look like Sarah Silverman. Excuse me ? she makes Nancy Reagan look like a drunk Sarah Silverman.

It?s almost as if Newt wants his campaign to dash upon the rocks whereupon he?ll put the blame (No. It?s you, not me?) upon Callista who brought him down with her siren call and also that thing she does with her tongue. Don?t ask. No. Really. You don?t want to know. Then Newt can make plans for another comeback ? his third act ? where he?ll enter [stage right] singing What I Did For Love while letting his piggy eye roam over the chorus line as he casts about for, yet again, another leading lady.

Turkey acknowledges killing civilians in Iraq strike (Reuters)

ANKARA (Reuters) ? Turkish warplanes killed 35 civilian smugglers in northern Iraq after mistaking them for Kurdish militants, Ankara's ruling party said on Thursday, promising not to allow a cover-up of an incident that threatens to wreck relations with minority Kurds.

The attack, which Turkey's largest pro-Kurdish party called a "crime against humanity," sparked clashes between hundreds of stone-throwing protesters and police in Diyarbakir, the largest city in Turkey's restive, mainly-Kurdish southeast.

The incident threatens to spoil efforts to forge Turkish-Kurdish consensus for a planned new constitution expected to partly address the issue of rights for the Kurdish minority.

The Turkish military had said its warplanes launched air strikes overnight after drones spotted suspected rebels of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The military had denied there were civilians in the area.

But ruling AK Party spokesman Huseyin Celik said initial reports based on local government officials had found the victims were not militants and that most of the dead were cigarette smugglers under the age of 30.

"It has been determined from initial reports that these people were smugglers, not terrorists," Celik told a live news conference, calling the incident "saddening."

"If mistakes were made, if there were flaws and if there were shortcomings in the incident that took place, by no means will these be covered up."

In addition to demonstrations in Diyarbakir, there were smaller protests in Turkey's largest city Istanbul, where police fired tear gas and water cannon at pro-Kurdish demonstrators.

"We have 30 corpses, all of them are burned. The state knew that these people were smuggling in the region. This kind of incident is unacceptable. They were hit from the air," said Fehmi Yaman, mayor of Uludere in Sirnak province.

Television images showed a line of corpses covered by blankets on a barren hillside, with a crowd of people gathered around, some with their head in their hands and crying.

Donkeys carried corpses down the hillside to be loaded into vehicles and taken to hospital.

The pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) said party leaders were heading for the area and that it would hold demonstrations in Istanbul and elsewhere to protest.

"This is a massacre," BDP Deputy Chairwoman Gultan Kisanak told a news conference in Diyarbakir. "This country's warplanes bombed a group of 50 of its citizens to destroy them. This is a war crime and a crime against humanity."

With most Turks favoring a hardline military response against the PKK, the incident is unlikely to hurt the popularity of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who won a third consecutive term in office in a June vote.

The Turkish military said it had learnt the PKK had sent many militants to the Sinat-Haftanin area, where the strikes occurred in northern Iraq, to retaliate after recent militant losses in clashes.

"It was established from unmanned aerial vehicle images that a group was within Iraq heading towards our border," it said.

"Given that the area in which the group was spotted is often used by terrorists and that it was moving towards our border at night, it was deemed necessary for our air force planes to attack and they struck the target at 2137-2224 (1937-2024 GMT)," it said.

"The place where the incident occurred is the Sinat-Haftanin area in northern Iraq where there is no civilian settlement and where the main camps of the separatist terrorist group are located," it said.

An investigation was in progress, it added, without referring to any deaths in the strikes.

CORPSES LOADED ONTO DONKEYS

Smuggling is an important source of income for locals in provinces along the Iraqi border, with many villagers involved in bringing fuel, cigarettes and other goods from Iraqi villages. PKK militants also cross the border in these areas.

"There were rumors that the PKK would cross through this region. Images were recorded of a crowd crossing last night, hence an operation was carried out," a Turkish security official said. "We could not have known whether these people were (PKK) group members or smugglers."

Security sources said those killed were carrying canisters of diesel on mules and their bodies were found on the Iraqi side of the border. They said the dead were from Uludere on the Turkish side of the border on a regular smuggling route.

The Firat news agency, which has close ties to the PKK, said that 17 people were still believed to be missing. It said those killed were aged around 17-20.

In northern Iraq, PKK spokesman Ahmet Deniz condemned the strike and said F-16 jets had bombed a group of around 50 people taking goods across the border and that 19 people were missing.

The PKK, regarded as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States, launches attacks on Turkish forces in southeastern Turkey from hideouts inside the remote Iraqi mountains.

Turkish leaders vowed revenge in October with air and ground strikes after the PKK killed 24 Turkish soldiers in one of the deadliest attacks since the PKK took up arms in 1984 in a conflict in which more than 40,000 people have been killed.

'Glee' Michael Jackson Episode: Rumored Set List Leaks

Perez Hilton reports that January 24 episode includes a 'Beat It' and 'Billie Jean' mash-up.

"Glee" has already dedicated entire episodes to Madonna, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, and come 2012, it's the King of Pop's turn.

A rumored set list for the January 24 "Glee" Michael Jackson tribute episode has hit the Web, and it features some of the late singer's greatest hits. Perez Hilton reports that 14 tracks have made the final cut, although the list has yet to be confirmed by anyone connected with the show.

The set list (along with who will perform the track) reportedly includes "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' " (Blaine), "Bad" (the New Directions and the Warblers), "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" (Finn and Rachel), "Smooth Criminal" (Santana and Sebastian), "Never Can Say Goodbye" (Quinn), "In the Closet" (Brittany and Santana), "We Are the World" (the New Directions and the Warblers), "Black and White" (Puck), "Ghost"/"Monster" (New Directions), "Beat It"/"Billie Jean" (Warblers), "The Way You Make Me Feel" (Kurt) and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" (Artie).

This is hardly the first time the show has paid homage to Jackson. Back in 2010, the New Directions performed his track "Thriller," complete with zombie garb, during an episode that aired after the Super Bowl. The show has also previously covered "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" and "Man in the Mirror."

Back in 2010, the cast of the hit Fox show had only imagined what it would be like to have an entire episode dedicated to Jackson. "I would love to do a Michael Jackson episode," Amber Riley told MTV News at the time. "You know, it's so many [songs that I love], but my favorite song by him is 'Human Nature.' I love that song."

While Riley seemed psyched about the opportunity, castmate Jenna Ushkowitz found the possibility a little more daunting. "That's a scary, scary episode to do," she said. "[But] that would be absolutely amazing."

Are you happy with the rumored set list? What's missing? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

(AP) ? North Carolina interim coach Everett Withers didn't blame the distraction of the program's upcoming coaching change. Instead, he blamed Missouri quarterback James Franklin.

Franklin ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, and the Tigers easily beat the Tar Heels 41-24 in the Independence Bowl on Monday night.

"He's just such a dynamic guy running and throwing that you have to respect both," Withers said. "I always count the quarterback as an extra running back in the spread and that's exactly what he was."

For North Carolina (7-6), a season that started with a promising 5-1 record ends with a lopsided loss. The Tar Heels lost five of their final seven under Withers, who leaves to become defensive coordinator at Ohio State under Urban Meyer.

Now the UNC program belongs to Larry Fedora, who left Southern Mississippi after a 12-2 season to lead the Tar Heels. But Withers said the imminent change wasn't on anyone's mind.

"We've had issues for two years so I don't know why tonight would be any distraction," Withers said.

North Carolina had the Atlantic Coast Conference's second-best rushing defense, giving up just 106.2 yards per game. But the Tigers found plenty of running room with Franklin and Kendial Lawrence repeatedly gashing the Tar Heels for big gains.

Lawrence rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown as the Tigers racked up 337 yards on the ground.

North Carolina's poor defense wasted a productive game by quarterback Bryn Renner, who threw for 317 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. But Renner couldn't offset the Tar Heels' anemic running game, which produced just 36 yards.

Freshman running back Giovani Bernard rushed for 31 yards ? more than 70 yards less than his season average.

Missouri (8-5) ends the season on a four-game winning streak for the first time since 1965. The Tigers will join the SEC next fall and showed one reason they should be a factor immediately: The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Franklin, a sophomore who generally did as he pleased in both the running and passing games.

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said Franklin has just started to realize his potential.

"After the game, I gave him a hug and said congratulations," Pinkel said. "Then I went back and asked 'What happens when you get really good?' ... He kind of gave me a look, but that's a huge compliment."

Franklin, named the game's offensive Most Valuable Player, rushed for 142 yards and threw for 132 despite less than ideal conditions at Independence Stadium. He led the Tigers to 31 first-half points ? an Independence Bowl record.

Missouri's mascot ? Truman the Tiger ? shattered most of the original Independence Bowl trophy before the game started in a pre-game accident. The Tigers were more than happy to claim the replacement.

Pinkel didn't shy away from the importance of the game, saying the result would be "a trivia question after I'm long gone."

North Carolina scored first, with Renner hitting Dwight Jones for a 22-yard touchdown pass with 12:12 left in the first quarter. That would be the high point for the Tar Heels.

Missouri responded with a 40-yard touchdown pass from receiver T.J. Moe to Wes Kemp after a lateral from Franklin. Moe hadn't thrown a touchdown pass since his days as a high school quarterback in suburban St. Louis, and it was just his second complete pass of the season.

"I saw the corner bite and I just let her go," Moe said.

The Tigers scored again on Franklin's 2-yard run to take a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter. The touchdown was set up by Franklin's 16-yard pass to L'Damian Washington that put the Tigers at the 2-yard line. Washington grew up in Shreveport, just a few miles from Independence Stadium.

And Missouri just kept piling on.

The Tigers scored two touchdowns and a field goal during the second quarter to take a 31-10 halftime lead.

North Carolina had a glimmer of hope late in the third when Jheranie Boyd caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from Renner to pull the Tar Heels to 34-17, but Missouri responded minutes later with Franklin's second touchdown run and the rout continued.

Ford Reports F-150 Ecoboost V-6 Truck Sales Hit 100,000 Mark

It seems as though Ford?s EcoBoost engines have not only boosted fuel-efficiency, but also sales, as the automaker is reporting that 100,000 full-size pickups with the V-6 EcoBoost engine have been sold this year. The efficient, powerful twin-turbo V-6 was one of the highlights that helped the F-150 win our 2012 Truck of the Year.

This may not come as a surprise to some, since Ford?s first-quarter sales provided a pretty accurate forecast for this milestone. The first pickups with the Ecoboost went on sale in late February, and shortly after in April, it had already accounted for 35 percent of F-150 sales, with Ford predicting incoming orders would track even higher at 40 percent. Fast forward to October, and the automaker upped its sales forecast to a 45 percent take rate, with the 75,000 units sold through September being a good indication.

The 3.5-liter Ecoboost V-6 is rated at 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, returning five more horsepower and 40 more lb-ft of torque than the equivalent 5.0-liter V-8 engine. The truck is also offered with conventional naturally-aspirated 3.7-liter V-6 as the base engine, but the high demand continues to center around the more powerful EcoBoost. ?Keeping the momentum, Ford is aggressively rolling out other versions of the EcoBoost formula across its passenger cars and SUV lineup in both four and six-cylinder (and even three-cylinder) versions.

The 100,000 sales mark for the EcoBoost is significant, since the automaker had not seen V-6 pickups sell in such high numbers since 1985.

Kate Middleton Shines in Magenta on Christmas

Duchess Kate Middleton certainly looked festive on Christmas in her plum-colored coat and coordinating hat as she joined Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Charles, Duchess Camilla and Queen Elizabeth II for church services in Sandringham, Norfolk, UK.

Here's a nice shot of the royal family members ...

Royal Family on Christmas

Queen Elizabeth, 85, took a car, while the rest of the family walked. Her husband Prince Philip, 90, underwent emergency surgery Friday for a blocked coronary artery.

Saturday, members of the royal family visited Philip in the hospital. Buckingham Palace officials issued an update, saying he had "a good night" following his procedure.

The royal family spent Christmas day at the Queen's Sandringham estate. Today, Pippa Middleton will join her sister and the royal family for a pheasant shoot.

Kate, William and Pippa will then travel to the Middleton family's home in Bucklebury.

The big question: Will Kate Middleton pregnancy rumors or gossip about Pippa and Prince Harry hooking up become the UK tabloid story of the week? Stay tuned!

First family celebrates Christmas with troops

The first family attended church services and visited with military families in Hawaii as they celebrated Christmas Day.

The White House said the president made holiday phone calls to U.S. servicemembers on Christmas Eve before sitting down to dinner with his family.?

The Obamas gathered to open their gifts this morning at 8 a.m. Christmas morning before eating breakfast and singing carols.?They also attended a church service at the Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay chapel.?

After a short return to their rental home, the Obamas made a second trip to base to greet troops and their families.

The Obamas have enjoyed a low-key Christmas vacation since the president touched down on Friday. They are spending the holidays with friends from Hawaii and Chicago as well as with the president's sister Maya Soetoro-Ng.

In Washington, Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden visited with wounded servicemembers at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.?

The first family will end their Christmas with a family dinner at their vacation home and are expected to return to Washington after New Year's Day.

The president's family was already in Hawaii but Obama's trip was delayed until Friday as House Republicans initially rejected a Senate-passed payroll tax cut extension. Obama had urged lawmakers to stay in town until their work was finished.

But on Thursday, the House GOP capitulated after pressure from Senate Republicans and signs they were losing the debate in the public eye. The president left for Hawaii shortly after signing a two-month tax cut break.

On Our Radar: Nigerian Coast Braces for Oil's Advance

December 23, 2011, 7:47 am By THE NEW YORK TIMES

Nigerian coastal communities are on alert as a 350-square-mile oil slick from a Royal Dutch Shell spill moves toward their shores. Officials report that it is the worst offshore spill there since 1998. [The Guardian]

Scientists are awakening to the danger that discovering new species and documenting their habitat can lead to the animals? being overhunted for commercial purposes. [Mongabay.com]

The choose-and-cut Christmas tree business is fading nationally, and the overall tradition of buying real trees is receding as well. Some 27 million real trees were sold nationwide last year, down from 37 million two decades ago, as artificial trees, mostly from China, gained popularity. [The Los Angeles Times]

Mayor Reed responds to inquiries about airport concessions

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

At its next meeting Jan. 3, the Atlanta City Council may award the contracts for running restaurants, bars and shops at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

The deals are long-term ? many cover at least 10 years ? and during that decade the total concession sales at the airport will be in the hundreds of millions. Because there?s so much money involved, airport concessions over the years have sometimes been tainted by corruption and challenged in court. This year, however, Atlanta?s new mayor said he would establish a new and transparent method for awarding those deals.

The Journal-Constitution sought to interview Mayor Kasim Reed about airport contracting, but he declined and said he would only accept written questions. Here are the AJC?s questions and the mayor?s responses.

1. Essentially, the fact that many of the winning bidders are significant contributors or participants in your campaign can give the impression that they won because they have a close relationship with you, or at least that the relationship was a factor. Was it?

No. I was not involved in the solicitation, evaluation or selection of the winners of this procurement. This question requires context about the decision made by the Department of Aviation (?DOA?) and the Department of Procurement (?DOP?) to bid the entire concessions package at once. This is something that has never been done. Typically, the packages are bid in phases. The DOA and DOP decided to rebid everything at once to ensure the most fair and ethical process possible. Why? If city officials had phased in the program, some would have argued that companies that received lease extensions were getting special treatment because they donated to my campaign. So, instead, my Administration started the procurement process from a blank slate where everyone could compete on a level playing field.

Since my inauguration, I have taken or directed my Administration to take a series of unprecedented actions regarding the management and business operations of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, including:

1. Returning campaign contributions from vendors competing for a procurement;

2. Implementing a new process for hiring the Aviation General Manager at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. I appointed a panel of nine, well-respected business leaders to identify and review candidates for the position. The result? The selection of Louis Miller, who spent 28 years running two of America's busiest airports without a hint of scandal or any ethical lapses. He has led and been the primary architect of this process, and his record as a professional should be noted;

3. Disclosing the financials of Hartsfield-Jackson Airport to our airline tenants, most notably Delta Air Lines, which resulted in a $30 million contribution to our bond financing efforts;

4. Bringing the Corey litigation to a satisfactory conclusion for the plaintiff and the City of Atlanta;

5. Conducting background checks on the members of the selection panel;

6. Committing to make the names of the selection panel public, an action which has never occurred at any point before, during or after an airport procurement in the City of Atlanta.

2. Conversely, it would appear that bidders that did not give a lot of money did not win. Is that coincidental?

Again, I was not involved in the solicitation, evaluation or selection of the winners of this procurement. This question also requires more context. It is important to note that I have returned all contributions from airport vendors since the procurement process began, an action which is unprecedented. I have raised about $3.6 million since I began campaigning for Mayor. The amount of contributions I have received from airport vendors represents a very small percentage of my total campaign contributions. It is also worth noting that the other two candidates for Mayor of the City of Atlanta in 2009 also received substantial contributions from airport vendors. A review of the campaign disclosures of the three candidates concluded that the contributions made to them had no direct correlation to whether or not a particular proponent would be successful in winning a concessions bid. Please see the attached document.

3. Why would you have airport concessionaires play such a role in your campaign in the first place? Given that it could have been predicted that questions would be raised about possible conflicts of interest at the airport, why was Daniel Halpern your co-chair? Why not go with someone who?s not a significant contractor?

There is no conflict of interest because I was not involved in the solicitation, evaluation or selection of the winners of this procurement. I selected Dan Halpern as my campaign co-chair because of his qualifications for the position. Mr. Halpern is a member of the Democratic National Committee, Chairman of the Georgia Restaurant Association and a Board Member of the National Restaurant Association. Mr. Halpern also served as a member of the National Finance Committee for the campaign of President Barack Obama. It is important to note that I selected other well-respected individuals such as Elaine Alexander, Gwen Keyes Fleming and Peter Aman as my campaign co-chairs as well.

4. Did you or your staff discuss the bids with any bidder during the RFP process or provide help or advice of any kind?

I did not have any discussions with bidders or provide help or advice of any kind. Further, I am not aware of any discussions between staff and the bidders. The City of Atlanta implemented a ?black-out? period during the active phase of the procurement, which is the period between when the RFPs are issued by the Department of Procurement and the time that the Atlanta City Council awards the contracts. The black-out period also includes any additional time during which any resulting protests are resolved or the RFPs are otherwise canceled. During the active procurement process phase, proponents and individuals acting on behalf of proponents are prohibited from communicating with City-appointed officials and employees about the solicitations or proponents.

5. Can you characterize your relationship with the following individuals: Wassim Hojeij, Daniel Halpern, Mack Wilbourn and Terry Harps?

Sure, I know each of them. The individuals listed above are well-known, successful businessmen in the City of Atlanta.

6. Was the fact that certain companies? proposals would be disqualified a factor in the decision to reissue the RFP?

Chief Procurement Officer Adam Smith decided to re-issue the bids because 36 percent of the proposals would have been disqualified due to errors with the state-mandated E-verify form. It is worth noting that my Administration met with members of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution?s editorial board and a large contingent of reporters and editors on Friday, September 2, 2011, to share the rationale behind the decision and its implications prior to making a public announcement. Chief Operating Officer Peter Aman, Deputy Chief Operating Officer Duriya Farooqui, Chief of Procurement Adam Smith and Director of Communications Sonji Jacobs attended the meeting from the City of Atlanta; James Mallory, Bert Roughton, Kyle Wingfield, Matt Kempner and Kelly Yamanouchi were among those AJC reporters and editors who attended the meeting. It is also important to note that Delta Air Lines, the airport's largest tenant, supported the city's decision to re-bid this procurement in order to insure that we had the highest amount of competition possible so that the city can repay the $1.5 billion in debt that is associated with the airport, namely financing of the new Maynard H. Jackson International Jr. Terminal. Earlier this month, we were recognized by The Bond Buyer for the Deal of the Year in the Southeast Region for the debt financing around that transaction.

7. Would Delaware North Companies? proposals have been disqualified during the first round?

Once again, I was not involved in the solicitation, evaluation or selection of the winners of this procurement so I did not know which companies were competing in the bid process. The initial RFP was cancelled when the Department of Procurement conducted its initial review and found that 36 percent of the proposals would have been disqualified due to errors on the state-mandated E-verify form. I believe the Chief Procurement Officer?s decision to re-bid was the correct course of action because this process occurs once every 7-10 years, and we needed maximum competition. If approved by the Atlanta City Council, the recommendations will significantly increase competition as shown by the fact that the airport is projected to receive $23 million dollars more per year in additional revenue.

8. Would that have affected Mr. Halpern?s contract wins? Did Halpern or anyone on his behalf discuss this issue with anyone with the city (including in the mayor?s staff, procurement, law, aviation, etc.) or on the city?s behalf?

I was not involved in the solicitation, evaluation or selection of the winners of this procurement so I do not know what would have affected Dan Halpern or any other vendor, nor am I aware of any such discussions between Mr. Halpern and city staff. Again, the City of Atlanta implemented a black-out period during the procurement, which is still in effect.

9. When did the city make the decision to prohibit exclusive agreements between primes and subtenants and have no limit on the number of contracts subtenants could win? Why did the city make that decision? Was it a result of small businesses asking for that provision? Which, if any, companies asked for the change?

This question should be referred to Louis Miller, General Manager for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and the Department of Aviation staff because I had no role in making that decision.

How to build a gamma-ray laser with antimatter hybrid

HALF matter, half antimatter, positronium atoms teeter on the brink of annihilation. Now there's a way to make these unstable atoms survive much longer, a key step towards making a powerful gamma-ray laser.

All the elements in the periodic table consist of atoms with a nucleus of positively charged protons, orbited by the same number of negatively charged electrons. Positronium, symbol Ps, is different. It consists of an electron and a positron orbiting each other (see diagram). A positron is the electron's antimatter counterpart. Though positively charged like the proton, it has just 0.0005 times its mass. Positronium "atoms" survive less than a millionth of a second before the electron and positron annihilate in a burst of gamma rays.

In principle, positronium could be used to make a gamma ray laser. It would produce a highly energetic beam of extremely short wavelength that could probe tiny structures including the atomic nucleus - the wavelength of visible light is much too long to be of any use for this.

The trouble is that this means assembling a dense cloud of positronium in a quantum state known as a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). How to do this without the positronium annihilating in the process was unclear.

Now a team led by Christoph Keitel of the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany, suggests that ordinary lasers could be used to slow the annihilation. The trick is to tune the lasers to exactly the energy needed to boost the positronium into a higher energy state, in which the electron and positron orbit farther from one another. That makes them much less likely to annihilate (arxiv.org/abs/1112.1621).

The positronium will eventually lose energy by emitting photons and return to the annihilation-prone state. But the team calculates that about half the excited positronium atoms can survive for 28 millionths of a second on average, 200 times as long as unexcited ones.

This may be long enough to assemble the BEC cloud. In a BEC, positronium atoms behave in lockstep, so when one annihilates itself, the rest follow suit, producing a burst of laser radiation made of gamma rays.

It may sound like a lot of work, but one thing makes the task easier. Ordinary atoms can only form a BEC when cooled gradually to within a fraction of a degree of absolute zero. By contrast, due to quantum effects, positronium will form a BEC at close to room temperature.

Where mirror, dark and anti-matter meet

Half a century after it was first made, positronium could find uses. As well as powering a gamma ray laser (see main story), it might put the strange theory of mirror matter to the test.

The idea that every particle has an identical - but so far undetectable - mirror partner was dreamed up to explain baffling asymmetries in the emission of electrons from radioactive atoms. Mirror matter has also been touted as a candidate for the mysterious dark matter that makes up 80 per cent of the universe.

The theory says that particles of ordinary matter might very occasionally transform into their mirror-reversed versions, effectively disappearing from view. Positronium normally ends its life by hurling out a flurry of gamma rays. If the mirror world exists, positronium might sometimes turn into mirror matter and vanish without these emissions.

The idea could be tested by trapping positronium in a chamber and keeping track of how much energy it gives off as gamma rays. If the amount is smaller than expected based on the number of positronium atoms that entered the chamber, then some of it may be turning into mirror matter. New calculations by Sergei Demidov of the Institute for Nuclear Research in Moscow, Russia, and colleagues indicate this should happen often enough to be detectable (arxiv.org/abs/1111.1072).

Paolo Crivelli of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich is leading the development of one such experiment (arxiv.org/abs/1005.4802). The existing AEgIS antimatter experiment at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland, could also be modified for this purpose.

Lockerbie bomber insists he was wrongly convicted (AP)

LONDON ? The convicted Lockerbie bomber claimed Thursday to have new evidence about the 1988 terrorist attack on Pan Am Flight 103 that he said could clear his name.

Abdel Baset al-Megrahi was convicted in 2001 over the attack that killed 270 people, most of them American, when the aircraft exploded over the Scottish town. He was freed from a Scottish jail on compassionate grounds in August 2009 after doctors estimated he had only three months to live due to cancer.

In an interview published in several British newspapers, which they reported had been carried out by al-Megrahi's friend George Thomson on Saturday, the former Libyan intelligence officer protested his innocence and claimed he was on the brink of death.

"I am an innocent man," al-Megrahi was quoted as saying. "I am about to die and I ask now to be left in peace with my family."

Since the fall of ex-Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, Scotland has asked Libya's new authorities to help track down others responsible for the Lockerbie bombing.

In the interview, al-Megrahi said he had collaborated on a new book about the case, which he claimed would present new evidence. He insisted that a key prosecution point against him at his trial was flawed.

Prosecutors said al-Megrahi had bought clothes in Malta that were later packed around the bomb. A key witness, shopkeeper Tony Gauci, identified al-Megrahi during the trial.

"I never ever in my entire life bought clothes from his shop, I have never bought clothes from him. He dealt with me very wrongly. I have never seen him in my life before he came to court," al-Megrahi was quoted as saying.

Al-Megrahi said the interview, which was filmed by Thomson for a documentary scheduled for release in February, would be his final comment on the case.

"I will not be giving any more interviews, and no more cameras will be allowed into my home," he was quoted as saying.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: No. 11 Florida pulls away from FSU; Mercer upsets Ga. Tech

Florida?s Patric Young, right, gets hung up as he tries to get around Florida State?s Okaro White, center, during Thursday?s game, which the No. 11 Gators won, 82-64.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? Florida State?s lopsided loss at No. 11 Florida left coach Leonard Hamilton contemplating a lineup change.

Hamilton said he is considering switching to a three-guard lineup following an 82-64 loss in Gainesville on Wednesday night that exposed his team?s ability to handle the ball and defend the 3-point line.

The Seminoles (8-4) likely will insert Ian Miller into the starting five. Miller, who sat out the first semester because of academics, made his season debut against Florida and scored seven points in 22 minutes.

Luke Loucks led Florida State with 15 points and Terry Whisnant added 11. Antwan Space also made his season debut, giving Hamilton more options on the floor.

None of them worked.

?Our team is kind of in a flux a little bit,? Hamilton said. ?We?re going to have to maybe put another perimeter guy in the game to take advantage of our depth in another way. We have not taken care of the ball very well. You turn the ball over 19 times against Florida, that?s not the right formula for success.?

Bradley Beal led Florida (10-2) with 21 points as the Gators extended their winning streak to five and their home winning streak to 12. Patric Young showed the best post moves of his career, a performance that included dunks, layups and several nifty hook shots with each hand.

More impressive was what he did on the other end of the floor.

Young scored 15 points and had a highlight-reel block ? a left-handed gem that sparked a decisive second-half run.

?Whenever you block somebody?s shot and pull it down with one hand, that?s making ?SportsCenter,?? Young said. ?I just saw him going for the roll and I was able to time it right. I didn?t think I was going to rip it down. It was just perfect. It just came right in my hand.

?I?ve pinned someone?s dunk before. I haven?t ripped it out with one hand before, though.?

Florida State had no answer for Young inside and did little to slow down Beal?s long-range shooting and slicing drives. Seemingly more complex for the Seminoles (8-4) was Florida?s press. The result was a third consecutive loss in the series.

The Seminoles had eight turnovers in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, errors that fueled a 15-2 spurt that turned a two-point game into a lopsided affair.

?This Florida team is the most difficult team for us to beat, at least since I?ve been at Florida State,? Hamilton said. ?They play so well together; they execute their system almost to perfection. You have little room for error.?

GEORGIA TECH LOSSES: Mercer finally got its breakthrough victory over one of Georgia?s major college teams.

Travis Smith went 6 of 6 at the foul line in the final minute and Mercer overcame a seven-point second half deficit, snapping a nine-game losing streak to in-state foe Georgia Tech with a 65-59 victory Thursday night.

Monty Brown scored a career-best 13 points off the bench to lead four double-figure scorers for Mercer (8-5). Glen Rice Jr. had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (7-5).

?This is a big victory for us and something for us to build on,? Mercer coach Bob Hoffman said. ?I?m just thrilled to see these guys enjoy the fruits of their labors.?

Mercer?s last victory over Tech had come on Jan. 28, 1974, when the Bears won 102-85 in Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets had won 20 of the past 22 meetings in a series that goes back to 1909.

?This isn?t just for us,? the Bears? Bud Thomas said. ?This is for Mercer and all the teams that came before us.?

Mercer led Georgia by eight points in the first half at Athens on Tuesday before losing 72-58. It was the 15th straight loss to the Bulldogs for Mercer, which almost upset them last season before losing 56-53.

The Bears, a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, also had some close games against Tech in recent years. This time Mercer broke through.

Tech went on an 11-3 run to go up 51-44 with 7:02 left to play. But Mercer closed the game on a 21-8 run. After Rice?s two free throws with 1:16 left got Tech back within two points, Mercer went 7 of 8 at the foul line to close out the win. The Yellow Jackets? only score in the final minute was a 3-pointer by Jason Morris.

No. 1 Syracuse 80, Tulane 61: James Southerland and Brandon Triche each hit a pair of 3-pointers to key a 19-point first-half surge, and top-ranked Syracuse beat Tulane 80-61 on Thursday night to remain unbeaten.

It?s the third straight season Syracuse has won its first 13 games. The Orange have won three straight since reaching the top spot in the rankings 10 days ago, including victories over North Carolina State and Bucknell.

Tulane (11-2) had faced the No. 1 team in the nation twice before, losing to Cincinnati (72-59) in January 2000 and Memphis (97-71) in February 2008. The Green Wave has never defeated a top-five team and hasn?t beaten a top-10 since a 49-47 victory over No. 9 Memphis in February 1983.

Dion Waiters had 15 points, Kris Joseph added 13, and Southerland 10 for the Orange.

Kendall Timmons led Tulane with 16 points, Ricky Tarrant had 15, and Jordan Callahan 10.

No. 2 Ohio State 69, Miami (Ohio) 40: William Buford scored 18 points and Aaron Craft dominated at both ends as No. 2 Ohio State started fast and never looked back to beat Miami of Ohio 69-40 on Thursday night.

Deshaun Thomas added 15 points and Jared Sullinger 11 for the Buckeyes (12-1), who won their 33rd straight at home. The game was played at Nationwide Arena, home of the NHL?s Blue Jackets. The building will host second- and third-round NCAA tournament games in March.

Julian Mavunga led the RedHawks (3-7) with 19 points.

Craft had just four points but set the tempo at both ends with eight assists, two steals, three rebounds and several other plays that led to points.

NO. 3 KENTUCKY 87, LOYOLA (MD.) 63: Reserve Kyle Wiltjer scored a personal-best 24 points and a trio of freshmen sparked Kentucky on a 17-2 second-half run for the Wildcats? 42nd straight home win.

Freshmen Wiltjer, Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist all had afternoons to remember as Kentucky (11-1) heads into a five-day break before the schedule begins to ramp up.

Davis contributed 15 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks, Kidd-Gilchrist added 15 points and seven rebounds and Darius Miller had 13 points. Kentucky hosts Lamar on Wednesday night before renewing its in-state rivalry with No. 4 Louisville on Dec. 31.

Erik Etherly scored 14 points, Dylon Cormier 13 and Justin Drummond 10 for Loyola (8-3).

NO. 8 CONNECTICUT 79, FAIRFIELD 71: Shabazz Napier scored 24 points to lead Connecticut in the final game before coach Jim Calhoun serves a three-game suspension for NCAA recruiting violations.

Jeremy Lamb added 18 points and Andre Drummond had 16 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two blocks for the Huskies (10-1), who won their 41st straight non-conference game.

Rakim Sanders had 20 points, Sean Crawford 14 and Derek Needham 12 for Fairfield (7-5), which cut a 22-point second-half deficit to three with 2:23 left before bowing to the Huskies.

Calhoun will return to the sideline Jan. 7 at Rutgers after he sits out three Big East games against South Florida, St. John?s and Seton Hall.

NO. 16 GEORGETOWN 70, MEMPHIS 59: Jason Clark scored 18 points and Hollis Thompson added 17 as Georgetown extended its winning streak to eight games.

Georgetown (10-1) held the lead for the entire game and opened the margin to as much as 20 points before a late surge by Memphis, although the Tigers were unable to complete the comeback.

Chris Crawford scored 17 and Will Barton had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Memphis, which has lost three of its last four games.

The teams were playing a rare non-conference rematch. Georgetown beat then-No. 8 Memphis 91-88 in overtime in the fifth-place game of the Maui Invitational on Nov. 23.

NO. 17 INDIANA 89, UMBC 47: Matt Roth scored a season-high 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc to lead the depleted Hoosiers.

Indiana heated up from long range in the second half, shooting 69 percent (9 of 13) from the 3-point line after going 2 for 14 in the first half. Indiana came in as the No. 1 team in the country in 3-point field goal percentage at 47 percent.

Christian Watford led Indiana (12-0) with 22 points.

Chase Plummer, Quentin Jones and Ryan Cook each scored 10 points for the Retrievers (1-10).

Indiana outscored UMBC 52-24 in the second half.

NO. 18 MISSISSIPPI STATE 82, NORTHWESTERN STATE 67: Arnett Moultrie had 24 points and 14 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season for Mississippi State.

Moultrie led a big night for the Bulldogs? big men. Reserve Wendell Lewis scored 14 points, while Renardo Sidney added nine points and four rebounds in the first half before sitting out the rest of the game because of a strained patella tendon in his left knee.

Mississippi State (12-1) has won 11 straight games.

Shamir Davis scored 15 points for Northwestern State (7-6), which pulled within 45-39 early in the second half before MSU responded with an 11-1 run.

NO. 20 MICHIGAN 77, BRADLEY 66: Evan Smotrycz had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Tim Hardaway Jr. added a soaring dunk during a decisive run in the second half to lead Michigan.

The Wolverines (10-2) overcame uncharacteristically poor shooting in the first half. The game was tied at 45 in the second when Smotrycz made a 3-pointer to put Michigan ahead to stay. Bradley (5-7) still trailed by one at 50-49 when the Wolverines went on a 21-7 run.

Hardaway scored 16 points and Trey Burke added 12 points for the Wolverines.

Taylor Brown led the Braves with 17 points, including a 3-pointer from about 35 feet on the final shot of the first half that tied the game at 33.

NO. 23 CREIGHTON 87, NORTHWESTERN 79: Doug McDermott scored 18 of his 27 points in the second half and Creighton defeated a Big Ten opponent for the third time this season.

McDermott?s performance trumped that of Northwestern?s Drew Crawford, who scored 34 points to tie an opponent record at the CenturyLink Center.

Antoine Young scored 13 points, Gregory Echenique and Manigat had 11 apiece, and Wragge added 10 for Missouri Valley Conference favorite Creighton (10-1), which also has wins over the Big Ten?s Iowa and Nebraska.

John Shurna had 18 points and Davide Curletti added 10 for Northwestern (10-2).
