Heart attack risk differs between men and women

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2011) ? Findings on coronary CT angiography (CTA), a noninvasive test to assess the coronary arteries for blockages, show different risk scenarios for men and women, according to a study presented November 30 at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a narrowing of the blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. It is caused by a build-up of fat and other substances that form plaque on vessel walls. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S.

Researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina analyzed the results of coronary CTA on 480 patients, mean age 55, with acute chest pain. Approximately 65 percent of the patients were women, and 35 percent were men. The possibility of acute coronary syndrome was ruled out for each of the patients.

Using coronary CTA, the researchers were able to determine the number of vessel segments with plaque, the severity of the blockage and the composition of the plaque.

"The latest CT scanners are able to produce images that allow us to determine whether the plaque is calcified, non-calcified or mixed," said John W. Nance Jr., M.D., currently a radiology resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md.

By comparing the coronary CTA results with outcome data over a 12.8-month follow-up period, the researchers were able to correlate the extent, severity and type of plaque build-up with the occurrence of major adverse cardiac events, such as a heart attack or coronary bypass surgery. The statistical analysis tested all plaques combined (calcified, non-calcified and mixed) and each individual plaque type separately.

"We found that the risks for cardiovascular events associated with plaque were significantly different between women and men," Dr. Nance said.

Within the follow-up period, 70 of the patients experienced major adverse cardiac events, such as death, heart attack, unstable angina or revascularization. In total, 87 major adverse cardiac events occurred among the patients during the follow-up period.

When the outcome data were correlated with the CTA combined plaque findings, the results indicated that women with a large amount of plaque build-up and extensive atherosclerosis are at significantly greater cardiovascular risk than men.

Specifically, the risk for major adverse cardiac events was significantly higher in women than in men when extensive plaque of any kind was present or when more than four artery segments were narrowed.

"This research tells us that extensive coronary plaque is more worrisome in women than the equivalent amount in men," Dr. Nance said.

However, when analyzing risk factors associated with the presence of individual types of plaque, the risk for major adverse cardiac events was greater in men, compared to women, when their artery segments contained non-calcified plaque.

Dr. Nance said the new data suggested that the atherosclerotic process, or hardening of the arteries, is not necessarily linear and that more research is needed to better understand the disease.

"Our research confirms that coronary CTA provides excellent prognostic information that helps identify risk, but there are gender differences that need to be considered," Dr. Nance said.

Mitt Romney portrayed as flip flopper in new DNC ads

Mitt Romney is the target of a new Democratic National Party ad airing in six swing states. The ad portrays Mitt Romney taking different positions on immigration, abortion, health care, and other issues.

The Democratic National Committee is up with this web advertisement (in addition to a shorter 30-second bit in Virginia, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pittsburgh and Wisconsin) highlighting what they see as Mitt Romney?s changes of heart on a variety of issues (from abortion to the President?s stimulus plan to recent ballot measures in Ohio) all interspersed with TV pundits and late-night talk show hosts taking aim at the GOP frontrunner.

While Newt Gingrich has garnered headlines - and is in the lead for the GOP nomination, according to some polls ? the DNC still sees Romney as the Republican to beat.?

Of course, political history is a contested place. Just a few days ago, MItt Romney?s campaign?launched an ad targeting Obama for, among other things, saying ?If we keep talking about the economy, we?re going to lose.?

Unfortunately for the Romney campaign, Politifact rated that piece of the commercial thus: "Pants on Fire."

That?s because Obama was explicitly quoting then-opponent John McCain in his statement. Politifact writes:

"We certainly think it?s fair for Romney to attack Obama for his response to the economy. And the Romney camp can argue that Obama?s situation in 2011 is ironic considering the comments he made in 2008. But those points could have been made without distorting Obama?s words, which have been taken out of context in a ridiculously misleading way."

If you see any ?pants on fire? moments in this latest DNC ad, let Decoder know and we?ll note it in a subsequent post.

Christie: Obama's just a 'bystander' (Politico)

Gov. Chris Christie on Monday tore into President Barack Obama in the aftermath of the supercommittee?s failure to reach an agreement on debt reduction last week, asking the president, ?What the hell are we paying you for??

Calling Obama ?a bystander in the Oval Office,? the outspoken New Jersey governor said the White House spent the weekend tossing out a whole lot of ?spin? about the supercommittee?s inability to come to an agreement before the Nov. 23 deadline.

?I was angry this weekend, listening to the spin coming out of the administration, about the failure of the supercommittee, and that the president knew it was doomed for failure, so he didn?t get involved. Well then what the hell are we paying you for?? Christie said during a press conference in Camden, N.J. ?It?s doomed for failure so I?m not getting involved? Well, what have you been doing, exactly??

Even though he said both parties deserve blame for talking at each other instead of talking with each other, Christie ultimately maintained that the buck stops with the nation?s highest in command and pointed to his own governance in the Garden State as a model for effective leadership.

?In New Jersey, the reason [problems got solved] is because I called people into the room and said we?re going to solve this problem and I had people of good will on the other side who said they believed it was their obligation, regardless of party, to get done things like pension and benefit reform,? the governor said, adding, ?Why the president of the United States refuses to do this is astonishing to me.?

If Obama doesn?t get his act together, he may as well go back to the Senate, Christie suggested.

?If he wanted to run for Senate again and just be 1 of a 100, I?m sure he could have gotten reelected over and over again in Illinois,? he said. ?He?s the one in Washington and he?s got to get something done here. And it?s not good enough just to say, ?Well, I?ll get it done after the election.??

NTU-led research probes potential link between cancer and a ...

Abstract:
A study led by a group of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) researchers has found that a chemical commonly used in consumer products can potentially cause cancer.

Singapore | Posted on November 29th, 2011

The chemical, Zinc Oxide, is used to absorb harmful ultra violet light. But when it is turned into nano-sized particles, they are able to enter human cells and may damage the user's DNA. This in turn activates a protein called p53, whose duty is to prevent damaged cells from multiplying and becoming cancerous. However, cells that lack p53 or do not produce enough functional p53 may instead develop into cancerous cells when they come into contact with Zinc Oxide nanoparticles.

The study is led by Assistant Professor Joachim Loo, 34, and Assistant Professor Ng Kee Woei, 37, from NTU's School of Materials Science and Engineering. They worked with Assistant Professor David Leong, 38, from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, National University of Singapore, a joint senior author of this research paper.

The findings suggest that companies may need to reassess the health impact of nano-sized Zinc Oxide particles used in everyday products. More studies are also needed on the use and concentration levels of nanomaterials in consumer products, how often a consumer uses them and in what quantities.

"Currently there is a lack of information about the risks of the nanomaterials used in consumer products and what they can pose to the human body. This study points to the need for further research in this area and we hope to work with the relevant authorities on this," said Asst Prof Loo.

The groundbreaking research findings were published in this month's edition of Biomaterials, one of the world's top journals in the field of biomaterials research. The breakthrough also validated efforts by Asst Prof Loo and Asst Prof Ng to pioneer a research group in the emerging field of nanotoxicology, which is still very much in its infancy throughout the world.

Nanotoxicology studies materials to see if they are toxic or harmful when they are turned into nano-sized particles. This is because nanomaterials usually have very different properties when compared to when the materials are of a larger size.

Asst Prof Ng said the team will carry out further research as the DNA damage brought about by nano-sized Zinc Oxide particles is currently a result of an unknown mechanism. But what is clear is that besides causing DNA damage, nanoparticles can also cause other harmful effects when used in high doses.

"From our studies, we found that nanoparticles can also increase stress levels in cells, cause inflammation or simply kill cells," said Asst Prof Ng who added that apart from finding out the cellular mechanism, more focused research is also expected to ascertain the physiological effects and damage that nano-sized Zinc Oxide particles can cause.

Asst Prof Loo pointed out that besides enhancing the understanding of the potential risks of using nanomaterials, advancements in nanotoxicology research will also help scientists put nanomaterials to good use in biomedical applications.

For example, although killing cells in our bodies is typically undesirable, this becomes a positive outcome if it can be effectively directed towards cancer cells in the body. At the same time, the team is also studying how nanomaterials can be "re-designed" to pose a lesser risk to humans, yet still possess the desired beneficial properties.

This research discovery is one of the latest in a series of biomedical breakthroughs by NTU in healthcare. Future healthcare is one of NTU's Five Peaks of Excellence with which the university aims to make its mark globally under the NTU 2015 five-year strategic plan. The other four peaks are sustainable earth, new media, the best of the East and West, and innovation.

Moving forward, the team hopes to work with existing and new collaborative partners, within and outside of Singapore, to orchestrate a more concerted effort towards the advancement of the fledgling field of nanotoxicology here, with the aim of helping regulatory bodies in Singapore formulate guidelines to protect consumer interests.

The research team would also like to work with the European Union to uncover the risks involving nanomaterials and how these materials should be regulated before they are made commercially available. Asst Prof Joachim Loo, who received his Bachelor and Doctorate degrees from NTU, was the only Singaporean representative in a recent nanotechnology workshop held in Europe. At the workshop, it was agreed that research collaborations in nanotoxicology between EU and South-east Asia should be increased.

Health Tip: Help Your Child Prepare for a Sibling (HealthDay)

(HealthDay News) -- It's common for children to feel jealous of a new sibling, including acting out and misbehaving.

The Nemours Foundation offers these suggestions for easing your child's transition to being an older sibling:

  • Let your child help choose items for the new baby's bedroom, or a special gift to share with the baby.
  • Spend some quality alone time with the elder child.
  • Read books, role-play and talk about what it's like with a new baby in the house.
  • Play up your child's new role as the "big" brother or sister.
  • Take your child with you to either an ultrasound appointment or to visit the new baby at the hospital.
  • Keep your child as involved as possible in preparing for the new baby.

From 'Team of Rivals' to TR (Politico)

President Barack Obama said during the 2008 campaign that the most essential book in his White House ? other than the Bible ? would be Doris Kearns Goodwin?s ?Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.? Goodwin?s 2005 book is a history of Lincoln and his Cabinet, depicting Lincoln as an extraordinary leader in part because he was able to win over his onetime political opponents and enlist them to help save the Union. It?s not hard to see why the book resonated with Obama, who has often cited Lincoln as a personal political influence.

On ?Meet the Press? this morning, Goodwin offered a different political model for Obama as he heads into a difficult reelection campaign: Teddy Roosevelt. She explained:

I think the post-partisanship has to go. That is what he came in hoping for, it proved not able to work. But if you look back at Roosevelt, FDR, he first tried to be a bipartisan leader, and then he got so hurt by the rancor of the Republican right, who called him a traitor to the class, that he went right after them, and he wins in a landslide. You know, "The forces of entrenched greed hate me. I welcome their hatred." I don't think that'll work for Obama because he's not a warrior, a happy warrior in that way. But there is a model for him in Teddy Roosevelt. Similar time to our, squeeze middle class, up and down gap between the rich and the poor. And what he does is say, "I like corporations as long as they do well by us. I like union?unions as long as they do well for us. But if they start screwing around with us, I'm going after them." And he called for a square deal, fundamental fairness. And that's where the country's at right now. When Obama first talked about the failure of the supercommittee, when he put out his grand proposal, it was the idea that people want fairness, they want balance. That's what Teddy Roosevelt was all about. Every sentence was balance.?

A shift in emphasis from conciliation and consensus, to fairness and balance, would be a subtle but significant one. It?s fair to wonder whether Teddy Roosevelt, who came to office in a moment of national crisis, amid rising anger over the uncontrolled influence of banks and other entrenched interests, would have been a more effective role model for Obama all along.?He's a president that Obama's 2008 opponent, John McCain, has tried at times to emulate, quoting TR in his own efforts to curb ?malefactors of great wealth? in the present day.

We may hear Goodwin ? for whom I once worked as a researcher ? develop this theme further over the next year. The Washington Speakers Bureau notes on her speaker page that she?s currently working on a book about ?the progressive era focusing on Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft and the golden age of journalism to be published in 2012.?

Wells' 228 yards?carry Cardinals past Rams

Beanie Wells, Josh Gordy

By R.B. FALLSTROM

updated 4:48 p.m. ET Nov. 27, 2011

ST. LOUIS - Beanie Wells ran wild all day. Patrick Peterson needed one touch to make a huge contribution for the Arizona Cardinals.

Peterson tied the NFL record with his fourth punt return for a touchdown this season, Wells set a franchise mark with 228 yards rushing on 27 carries, and the Cardinals won their seventh in a row in St. Louis with a 23-20 victory Sunday over the Rams.

Wells' career day included gains of 71 and 53 yards, the latter setting up Jay Feely's go-ahead 22-yard field goal with 4:12 remaining. Rookie Sam Acho also had a career day on defense with two sacks and a fumble recovery.

That was enough for Arizona (4-7) to overcome another awful outing by John Skelton, who threw two interceptions.

Brandon Lloyd's 16-yard TD catch from Sam Bradford tied it at 20 midway through the fourth quarter. Nick Miller had an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter for the Rams (2-9) only three days after he re-signed with the team.

Peterson was untouched on an 80-yard return up the middle in the third quarter, dodging just a few tacklers before finding clear sailing to put Arizona up 20-10. His 99-yarder in overtime beat the Rams three weeks ago in Arizona, and St. Louis coach Steve Spagnuolo had vowed that the rookie would not beat them again.

The cornerback from LSU, the fifth pick in the draft, is the fourth player with four punt returns in a season and the first in NFL history with four returns of 80-plus yards.

Wells was an even bigger factor, eclipsing the previous franchise mark of 214 yards by LeShon Johnson in 1996 at New Orleans. In the earlier meeting against the Rams, Wells had just 20 yards on 10 carries.

Acho has five sacks, three against the Rams. His fumble recovery set up Wells' 7-yard scoring run midway through the third quarter.

The Cardinals overcame three turnovers to keep their dominance going in St. Louis, the town they fled for the desert in 1987. It's their longest winning streak against any opponent. They're only 2-5 on the road this year, also winning at Philadelphia earlier this month.

The Rams re-signed Miller on Thursday after placing wide receiver Mark Clayton on injured reserve with a knee injury. He gave them the lead on their only big play of the first half, skirting the defense and scoring untouched with a convoy the last 30 yards of the return.

Arizona was 0 for 5 on third down in the half and had one big play, too. Wells' career-best 71-yard run to the 11 late in the first quarter set up a short field goal.

Poor clock management might have cost the Rams a chance for another touchdown at the end of the half.

Lloyd adjusted his route on an underthrown 26-yard pass to the Arizona 3 with 43 seconds left, then St. Louis went backward with a false start and Acho's second sack for a 9-yard loss. Coaches wasted at least 10 seconds before calling the last timeout with 12 seconds to go, and Bradford overthrew Lloyd in the end zone before the Rams settled for a field goal and a 10-3 lead.

The other players with four punt returns for a TD are Devin Hester (2007), Rick Upchurch (1978) and Jack Christiansen (1951), who was a rookie when he first set the record.

World temps maintain the heat of global warming (AP)

DURBAN, South Africa ? 2011 is currently tied for the 10th hottest since records began in 1850 and Arctic sea ice has shrunk to record-low volumes this year, the U.N. weather office said Tuesday.

The 13 hottest years on the books all have occurred in the last 15 years, IMO's deputy director R.D.J. Lengoasa told reporters on the sidelines of the U.N. climate conference under way in South Africa.

"The science is solid and proves unequivocally that the world is warming," Lengoasa said. Human activity was a significant contributor to this trend, he said.

"Climate change is real, and we are already observing its manifestations in weather and climate patterns around the world," he said.

The preliminary report by the International Meteorological Organization is based on the first 10 months of the year.

It was released in Geneva and at the U.N. climate talks in South Africa, provided a bleak backdrop to negotiators who are seeking ways to limit pollution blamed for global warming.

2011 has been a year of extreme weather, the weather service said. Parching drought in East Africa has left tens of thousands dead, and there have been deadly floods in Asia, and 14 separate weather catastrophes in the United States with damage topping $1 billion each.

High temperatures saturated the Earth despite a La Nina event, when low surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean has a cooling effect on the entire globe, the IMO said.

In an exhaustive study of extreme weather, the authoritative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported this month that such events will increase in frequency and intensity as the Earth continues to warm.

The IMO said the extent of Arctic sea ice in 2011 was the second-lowest on record, and its volume was the lowest. Scientists see the Arctic as the planet's most sensitive region and a barometer of the future.

The largest departure from the norm occurred in northern Russia, where thermometers soared and average 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius) above average in some places, and some stations reporting spring weather 16 degrees Fahrenheit (9 degrees Celsius) above normal.

The Russian Arctic and most of Siberia hold massive amounts of methane locked into the permafrost, carbon-rich soil that never thaws. Warmer summer temperatures mean a deeper thaw of permafrost and greater release of methane, a gas with a global warming potential 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.

The report came on the second day of the two-week conference in this South African coastal city attended by 192 parties seeking agreement on future action to curb climate change.

The talks will determine whether industrial countries will renew and expand their commitments under the 1997 Kyoto Protocol to reduce their greenhouse emissions and whether developing countries will accept binding limits on their emissions in the future.

Negotiators also are discussing how to raise $100 billion a year to help poor countries move to low-carbon economies and cope with the effects of global warming.

PFT: Teammates think Suh should be suspended

Green Bay Packers v Detroit LionsGetty Images

In the days since Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh pushed the helmet of Packers guard Evan Dietrich-Smith into the ground and then stomped on his arm while walking away, a sense has emerged that Suh should receiving a suspension of two or more games, given his history and the egregious nature of his conduct.

But a multi-game suspension may not happen, given the history of suspensions for on-field conduct meted out by Commissioner Roger Goodell.? Apart from the five-game suspension received in 2006 by former Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (who coincidentally returns to Tennessee today in his third game with the Buccaneers), no player has been suspended for more than one game by Goodell, via Gene Washington.

The following year, Goodell (via Washington) suspended former Cowboys safety Roy Williams one game after his third horse-collar tackle of the season.

The next year, Goodell (via Ray Anderson) suspended Buccaneers defensive back Elbert Mack one game for launching himself and making helmet-to-helmet contact with Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan; it was Mack?s second flagrant hit in three games.? Also in 2008, Jets safety Eric Smith received a one-game suspension and a $50,000 fine for a flagrant helmet-to-helmet hit on then-Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin.

In 2009, Goodell (again via Ray Anderson) suspended Dante Wesley of the Panthers for launching at Bucs punt returner Clifton Smith while he was waiting to catch the ball.? Wesley struck Smith in the head with a shoulder and forearm.

Again, Suh?s history of fines will be a factor, and his failure to express genuine remorse won?t help him.? Balanced against that will be the fact that he already has essentially been suspended for nearly half of one game, since he was ejected early in the third quarter.

So don?t be surprised if Suh is suspended for only one game.? Though he committed a Haynesworthy stomp, there?s a huge difference between stepping on a guy?s arm, which Suh did, and ripping off a player?s helmet and shredding his bare forehead with a cleat, which Haynesworth did.

But feel free to cast your own ballot below.? It was the subject of the FRS poll question when yours truly hosted The Dan Patrick Show on Friday.? Here?s another chance to sound off on what should happen.

UPDATE 10:35 a.m. ET:? When posting this I didn?t realize that our good friend Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com has posted similar information.? Here?s the link to Freeman?s take.

"Beginners," "Tree of Life" win Gotham Film Awards (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" and the Christopher Plummer film "Beginners" shared the top prize for best feature film on Monday at the Gotham Awards, a key event for independent movies which also marks the start of the film-awards season culminating in the Oscars.

The honors for "The Tree of Life," a mystical period drama starring Brad Pitt, and "Beginners," which stars Ewan McGregor as a man whose elderly father (Plummer) comes out of the closet, scored upset victories.

Alexander Payne's "The Descendants," a well-reviewed Oscar front-runner which stars George Clooney in a family drama set in Hawaii, was nominated in three categories but won none.

Instead "Beginners," directed by relative neophyte Mike Mills, also won best ensemble performance at the New York-based awards, co-hosted by Edie Falco and Oliver Platt.

Mills lauded his cast, singling out Plummer by saying there was "no good reason for Christopher Plummer to believe in me. But he did."

The best documentary honor went to "Better This World," about two boyhood friends from Texas accused of attempting to bomb the 2008 Republican convention.

The Gotham Awards are held annually by the Independent Feature Project, a nonprofit organization founded in 1979 that supports independent filmmaking. The awards provide a focus on the year's top independent movies heading into award season.

Felicity Jones took the prize for breakthrough actor for her work in "Like Crazy," playing a British student separated from her American boyfriend after her visa expires.

Dee Rees won the breakthrough director award for her debut non-documentary feature, "Pariah," about a New York City African-American teenager confronting her sexual identity.
