Great Books for Kids and Teens: Any Good Audio Book Suggestions?

I am looking for a really good audio book the whole family will enjoy to take on our spring break road trip and would appreciate any suggestions.

My sons are 14 and 17.? They both love adventure and suspense.? One loves fantasy; the other enjoys it sometimes but only if it is really good.? They both enjoy dystopian novels, too, and everyone loves humor.

Some of our past favorites have included:

Any recommendations for this trip??

3 Movie Review | Entertainment | Know your city

Director: Aishwarya R. Dhanush

Cast: Dhanush, Shruti Hassan

burrp! Says: **1/2

The film has finally released and we all think that it?s the curiosity factor that is capable of making it a hit. After all, you must have also lost count on how many times you have played Kolaveri Di on the loop. The movie doesn?t exactly turn on the fireworks but it doesn?t fizzle out either. This film is like a gun that has not been fired for a long time. It fires all right but its bullet strangely doesn?t make the required distance. The whole Tollywood has already proclaimed that this is an acid test for debutant director Aishwarya (lead actor Dhanush?s wife) and that everybody is waiting with bated breadth to see if she has managed to justify the hype surrounding the film. Has she? Read on?

True to its name, the film is about three phases in the life of Ram (Dhanish) and Janani (Shruti Haasan). The film starts with an intriguing scene about a funeral in which Janani lying down on the bed ? sad and perturbed. As expected, within few minutes, the movie goes into the flashback mode.

Phase 1: Ram, a school student meets Janani and falls for her and within no time Janani also reciprocates. The first phase is refreshing and lively with realistic incidents, barring few minor glitches in the storyline. The glitches? Take for instance, Dhanush seeking his dad?s time for discussing something ?that matters most in his life? and starts talking about his Tirupathi trip. The scene had the audience smirking. This phase is the most enjoyable phase in the film as this phase entertains you the most. It?s Ram?s friend (Sivakarthikeyan) who shines as an actor and keeps the audience in splits with his witty one-liners.

Phase 2: Love strengthens between the couple but as usual their parents come in their way. They decide to move to the US and take Janani along with them to prevent her from marrying Ram. Janani retaliates against her parents by burning her passport and tells them that she loves Ram and wants to live with him. Initially, they oppose, but later they give in after they meet Ram and find out that he is a sweet chap. The two get married in a nightclub? (Yes, they wanted a different shaadi) and start dreaming about living happily ever after. This phase, again, passes off like a breeze.

Till now the film sails through smoothly and engages you completely because it is hitherto a roller-coaster ride of emotional ups and downs. The narration is refreshing with the scenes moving back and forth with some suspense thrown in between.

Phase 3: Post interval, the final and third phase starts when Ram suddenly starts having psychological problems. He?s detected with bipolar disorder (!!!), a problem which forces a person to swing between moments of extreme happiness and sadness. Ram?s friend Senthil (Sunder Ramu) tries to help him and gets him treated without the knowledge of his wife. So, not only the relationship between him and his wife starts to falter from this point, the film starts to stumble too.

The film now takes the typical psychological thriller route from that point and one will tend to lose his interest from this point on because it becomes too predictable. The screenplay starts dragging lot and starts boring you. The only consolation in this phase is ?Why This Kolaveri Di? song and its simple and no nonsensical picturisation. You will like the song but not the phase.

The ending is very predictable. The message that comes after the ending (about suicide) will add to your dislike.

Talking about the casting, it?s a neat job. Ram is tailor-made for Dhanush and the National award winning actor once again proves that he is one of the finest actors in South India. His acting is natural and subtle. His body language and voice modulation are fantastic too. His commitment to the film is so high that one feels that all his hard work has been let down by a half-baked script, particularly in the second half.

Shruti Hassan has improved a lot since her last outing in ?7am Arivu? and impresses as a caring and confused wife. Sunder Ramu has done his later part to perfection but his physique didn?t blend well in the initial phase. Veteran actor Prabhu as Ram?s father has given a subtle performance with good support from other senior artists like Rohini and Bhanupriya.

The film is technically very rich with awesome sound clarity made possible by Oscar winner Resul Pookutty. The songs are the soul to this film and are perfectly in sync with the scenes and have been shot well. Anirudh Ravichander proves that he is not a one-song wonder kid and impresses with the background music particularly in the light-hearted moments. Velraj?s camera work is noteworthy and Kola Bhaskar?s editing could have been used to good effect to cut the unwanted scenes in the second half.

Overall, ?3? fails to meet the expectations and works only in parts. Newcomer Aishwarya shows promise by taking a serious subject in her very first film following the footsteps of her guru, Selvaraghavan. If she dared to think a little differently instead of walking on the beaten track, she would have triumphed here.

The film?s average and not worth watching in the theatres. Better wait for the DVD!

The U.S. Travel Association will bring its 2012 Vote Travel campaign to Colorado next month.

The 2012 Vote Travel campaign is a? 20,000-mile tour that will incorporate major rallies in cities across the country in an effort to spotlight travel industry?s contributions to the economy. The U.S. Travel Association members also hope to meet with local elected officials and travel industry leaders.

The tour will be in Denver April 7.

?Travel contributes $1.9 trillion to our economy and supports more than 14.4 million U.S. jobs, and the Vote Travel campaign aims to highlight the strength of our industry and engage its employees nationwide,? said Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association. ?While we?re having some fun and playing off the current campaign season, the Vote Travel bus tour and rallies present local travel advocates an important and creative tool in engaging elected officials in cities and states throughout the country and informing them about the power of our industry.?

The tour comes at a time when Colorado lawmakers consider a cut to the state?s tourism budget. The Denver Post reported this month that the Joint Budget Committee proposed $9.6 million budget for the Colorado Tourism Office, which is $5 million less than last year and mark a 50 percent decline from the office?s 2007 budget.

The Vote Travel tour also aims to highlight national policy issues that affect travel into the U.S. Vote Travel?s policy priorities include measures that reduce security and visa hassles associated with travel; efforts to promote small businesses because most travel industry companies employ 500 or fewer employees; and U.S. investment in promoting travel. The campaign also highlights the economic benefit that conventions and meetings bring to local communities.

Restaurant Unveils, Quickly Rethinks Chris Brown and Rihanna-Inspired "Black & Bleu" Burger

This is worse than that Chris Brown superhero cartoon.

A Watkinsville, Ga., steakhouse is feeling serious heat after promoting its "black and bleu" ribeye sandwich as being inspired by Chris Brown's beatdown of Rihanna.

We kid not, they really promoted the thing that way.

Chops & Hops put up a notice last week on the eatery's Facebook and Twitter pages announcing the newly-created sandwich, available for one day only.

Burger Chris-Rih

A heavy dose of ribeye topped with blue cheese, sliced tomato, "silver Lamborghini" onions and shredded romaine. The restaurant's posting said:

"@chrisbrown, @rihanna and us teamed up for an award winning sandwich ... Chris won't beat you up for eating this unless your name starts with a R and ends with A."

Mmmyeah. Shockingly, some customers weren't fans.

Considering Rihanna was assaulted in a Lamborghini, to the point where she sustained felony-worthy black and blue bruises, probably not the best PR stunt.

Not that Richard Miley is apologizing. On the contrary!

"I was not trying to make a joke of domestic violence, just bringing light to the situation through food," he said. "I do not regret doing it. I don't regret anything."

However, the restaurant set the record straight on Saturday with a follow-up Facebook post saying it takes the issue of domestic violence seriously.

"The owners of C&H would like to make sure everyone knows that we and our staff DO NOT SUPPORT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. Many of us have been affected by domestic violence in some manner and realize that this is no joke," read the message.

It went on to state that Chops & Hops plans to donate all proceeds from burger sales to Project Safe Team 6, an anti-domestic violence charity.

Probably not necessary to joke about in the first place, but that's nice at least. He did not say if they are planning a Karrueche Tran-themed Asian dish.

Health impact, interplay of diet soft drinks and overall diet unravelled

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? Are diet sodas good or bad for you? The jury is still out, but a new study sheds light on the impact that zero-calorie beverages may have on health, especially in the context of a person's overall dietary habits.

For the average person, the scientific evidence can seem confusing. A number of studies have implicated diet beverage consumption as a cause of cardiovascular disease. However, others have suggested such drinks may be a viable tactic for people who are trying to lose or control their weight.

Either way, most previous research has tended to focus either on people's drinking patterns and preferences, or their overall dietary habits -- in other words, most studies have failed to tease apart how those two aspects interact to affect people's health.

To address this problem, a new study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill examined not only people's beverage consumption patterns but also the diets of those who consume diet and sugar-sweetened beverages. The findings appear in the April issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Kiyah Duffey, Ph.D., study author and research assistant professor of nutrition at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, said that similar to previous studies, the new analysis found that people who consumed diet beverages tended to be less healthy than people who did not consume them.

"However, there was an important interplay between overall diet and what people drink," Duffey said. "It is important that people consider the entirety of their diet before they consider switching to or adding diet beverages, because without doing so they may not realize the health benefits they were hoping to see."

Researchers studied data collected over 20 years from more than 4,000 young adults who participated in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

In terms of eating habits, participants fell into two groups: people who ate what researchers dubbed a "prudent" diet (one with more fruit, fish, whole grains, nuts and milk) and individuals who consumed a "western" diet (which had higher amounts of fast food, meat and poultry, pizza and snacks).

People who were healthiest tended to be those who ate a prudent diet and did not consume diet beverages. They had a lower risk of high waist circumference, high triglyceride levels and metabolic syndrome (22 percent, 28 percent and 36 percent lower, respectively, than people who ate a western diet and did not drink diet beverages). But the second healthiest group was individuals with a prudent diet who also consumed diet beverages.

In contrast, individuals who consumed the western diet had increased risk of heart disease, regardless of whether or not they drank diet beverages.

The UNC researchers found that many dietary factors contributed to a person's overall health. Without taking diet beverage consumption into account, people who ate the prudent diet had significantly better cholesterol and triglyceride profiles and significantly lower risks of hypertension and metabolic syndrome than those who ate the western diet.

Duffey added: "Our study confirms the recommendations of the American Diabetes Association and many weight-loss programs, which suggest people drink these beverages as a way to cut calories and lose or control weight, but only in the context of the whole diet."

Jeep Debuts Two Ultra-Manly Retro Concept Trucks

Jeep J-12 Concept at Chrysler Tech Center in Auburn Hills

Jeep drove into its gene pool at full speed ahead of the upcoming Easter Jeep Safari,?showing two concepts inspired by products from the company's early years. The first, and most tame, is the Jeep J-12 Concept, it's basically a heavily modified version of the Jeep Wrangler pickup kit you can buy now. The kit encloses the cabin and adds a small cargo box to a Wrangler, but the J-12 Concept goes further. In addition to the obvious styling updates to reflect iconic Kaiser pickups, the rear overhang has been stretched by a foot, allowing for a full 6' cargo box and under-floor storage for the spare tire. The old-school theme continues inside, with body-color details and a bench seat finished in a kitchy plaid pattern.?During the development process?Jeep staff called it the?OMT: Old man truck. That's okay with us though, it's cool.

Jeep Mighty FC at the Chrysler Tech Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan

The other concept is the one everybody will be talking about out on the trails of Moab during the Safari. The Jeep Mighty FC Concept digs up the Forward Control truck idea from the company's days under Willy's. This monster started off as a two-door Wrangler in December, now it's been chopped up, lengthened, lifted, and totally re-imagined. The cabin's nose was lopped off, the back of the Wrangler pickup kit encloses the rear, and all-new doors were fabricated along with a long bed which conceals the spare tire, fuel tank, and suspension pieces, there's a little bit of storage along the top side of it. The drivetrain is stock Wrangler - 3.6- liter Pentastar V6 with about 285 hp, but now it's under the seats as is the front axle. That axle's also been modified with portal axle ends, a kit from Mopar which bolts to the end of a stock solid axle and offset's the wheels from the center of the axle. The result - more ground clearance with a less extreme suspension. Giant 39" tires and a huge heavy duty bumper with a winch finish out the look. This thing isn't just a pretty face either, the Jeep crew plans to wheel it in the off-road playgrounds of Utah in April so they've fitted it with a roll cage just in case coming down hills doesn't go well for the nose-heavy behemouth.

(AP) ? Sharp questioning by the Supreme Court's conservative justices cast serious doubt Tuesday on the survival of the individual insurance requirement at the heart of President Barack Obama's historic health care overhaul.

Arguments at the high court focused on whether the mandate for virtually every American to have insurance "is a step beyond what our cases allow," in the words of Justice Anthony Kennedy.

But Kennedy, who is often the swing vote on cases that divide the justices along ideological lines, also said he recognized the magnitude of the nation's health care problem and seemed to suggest that it would require a comprehensive solution.

.He and Chief Justice John Roberts emerged as the seemingly pivotal votes in the court's decision, due in June in the midst of a presidential election campaign that has focused in part on the new law. Republican candidates are strongly opposed.

Justices Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito appeared likely to join with Justice Clarence Thomas to vote to strike down the key provision of the overhaul. The four Democratic appointees seemed ready to vote to uphold it.

The congressional requirement to buy health care insurance is the linchpin of the law's aim to get medical insurance to an additional 30 million people, at a reasonable cost to private insurers and state governments. Virtually every American will be affected by the court's decision on the law's constitutionality.

Audio for Tuesday's court argument can be found at: http://apne.ws/Hft6z3

The biggest issue, to which the justices returned repeatedly during two hours of arguments in a packed courtroom, was whether the government can force people to buy insurance. And if so, could other mandates ? to buy broccoli, burial insurance and cellphones, for example ? be far behind?

"Purchase insurance in this case, something else in the next case," Roberts said.

Kennedy at one point said that allowing the government mandate would "change the relationship" between the government and U.S. citizens.

"Do you not have a heavy burden of justification to show authority under the Constitution" for the individual mandate? asked Kennedy.

At another point, however, he also acknowledged the complexity of resolving the issue of paying for America's health care needs.

"I think it is true that if most questions in life are matters of degree ... the young person who is uninsured is uniquely proximately very close to affecting the rates of insurance and the costs of providing medical care in a way that is not true in other industries. That's my concern in the case," Kennedy said.

Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. sought to assure the court that the insurance mandate in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that Obama signed into law two years ago is a key part of the law's goal of reaching many of the more than 40 million people who don't have health insurance through their employers, don't qualify for government aid and cannot afford to buy coverage on their own.

Paul Clement, a predecessor of Verrilli's who is representing Florida and 25 other states in challenging the law, called the mandate "an unprecedented effort by Congress."

He said the requirement would force people, especially those who are young and healthy, to buy a product they don't want.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she found the debate over health care similar to an earlier age's debate about the Social Security retirement system. How could Congress be able to compel younger workers to contribute to Social Security, but be limited in its ability to address health care? she wondered.

Does it to have to be "a government takeover"? she asked.

Clement acknowledged that a system of national health insurance might well be constitutional.

Earlier, Scalia repeatedly pointed out that the federal government's powers are limited by the Constitution, with the rest left to the states and the people. "The argument there is that the people were left to decide whether to buy health insurance," Scalia said.

Scalia and Roberts noted that the health care overhaul law would make people get insurance for things they may not need, like heart transplants or pregnancy services. "You can't say that everybody is going to participate in substance abuse services," Roberts said.

On the other hand, Ginsburg said, "The people who don't participate in this market are making it more expensive for those who do."

"You could say that about buying a car," Scalia retorted, noting that if enough people don't buy cars the cost could go up.

But, unlike cars, almost everyone eventually will be required to use the health care system, Verrilli said in defense of the law. Without health insurance, he said, "you're going to the market without the ability to pay for what you're going to get."

Demonstrators returned Tuesday to the sidewalk outside the Supreme Court, with more than 100 supporters of the law circling and chanting, "A healthy America is a productive America," ''Protect the law," and, "I love Obamacare."

More than a dozen opponents held a news conference criticizing the bill.

Supporters, two of them wearing statue of liberty costumes, marched to the song "Walking on Sunshine" and Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours," being played over a loudspeaker. A trumpet player played "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "this little light of mine," and supporters changed the lyrics to ones supporting the health care law.

One demonstrator opposing the law wore a striped prison costume and held a sign, "Obama Care is Putting the US Tax Payer in Debtors Prison."

Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, a former Republican presidential candidate, joined a tea party press conference of opponents of the law. Calling the law "the greatest expansion of federal power in the history of the country," she said, "We are calling on the court today: Declare this law unconstitutional."

Mike Tyson set to tell his story in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson has, in his own words, behaved like a "Neanderthal" for much of his life.

But next month, he hopes to become a "controlled artist, a disciplined artist" when he takes to a Las Vegas stage to talk about his checkered life as a childhood thief, an ear-biting fighter, an addict and a father of eight.

Tyson, who in 1986 became the youngest world heavyweight champion at age 20, is set to perform an autobiographical monologue called "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth - Live on Stage."

"I hope people are entertained, and happy. I hope they get to know certain things. My story's not pretty. There's lots of ugly stuff - not knowing if my mother ever loved me, or who my father was," Tyson, now 45, told Reuters in an interview.

In a hint at what may be in store for listeners, Tyson recalled growing up in a household with an absent father and an overburdened mother, and talked about how his older brother, Rodney, became a doctor, while he was a thief as a child.

"My brother's not as ignorant as I am, or was back then," he says, adding: "He's the first black person I saw play hockey."

That's Tyson's way of illustrating how different their lives have been, though both came from the tough Brooklyn neighborhood of Brownsville.

"He was always at the top of his class," Tyson said of his brother. "I was a different kid."

Tyson was undisputed world heavyweight boxing champion in the 1980s but in 1992 he was convicted of raping teenage beauty queen Desiree Washington in Indiana and served three years in prison.

He added to his notoriety later in the decade when he bit rival Evander Holyfield on both ears in a 1997 bout, for which he was disqualified and temporarily suspended from boxing. Tyson declared bankruptcy in 2003 and retired from professional boxing in 2006.

'RECKLESS AND DESTRUCTIVE'

Since his retirement from boxing, Tyson has appeared in the TV shows "Entourage" and "Brothers" and had a cameo role in the 2009 hit comedy movie "The Hangover."

Tyson credits his former trainer and mentor Cus D'Amato for his successes. Before D'Amato took him in, Tyson said, "I never met a white guy that knew how to talk to me. Before that, it was always submissive, ?Yes sir, no sir.'"

"He always told me, be careful how you fight, because the way you fight your fights is the way you live your life. And the way I fought was reckless and destructive and that that's how I lived my life for a while.

"I wish I was then the way I am now," Tyson said.

Adam Steck, the show's producer, said audiences will be surprised by the performances, which are scheduled for April 13-18 at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas strip.

"People think they know Mike Tyson but this is a totally different angle," Steck said. "The way he approaches life, he's a very spiritual guy and has learned so many lessons from life."

The former champion said he has learned to control his once-feared anger, a calm his wife, Kiki Tyson, attributes to a vegan diet. But signs of his rage arose when he talked about the February killing of black 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida.

"I wanna be angry, but what good would that do?" Tyson said.

Martin's shooting by a neighborhood watch volunteer who has not been charged in the case, has sparked protests in several U.S. cities.

Tyson called the incident tragic and said it "shut black America down. It shut all decent humanity down."

"I think about the kid they shot in Florida and I think about, it could be my son," he said.

As for today's fighters, Tyson demurs when asked if he thinks he could go toe-to-toe in the ring with heavyweights like the Klitschko brothers, who have been champions for much of the last decade.

"My ego tells me I could've beaten God ... but everyone has his day," Tyson said.

Turning his thoughts back to Mike Tyson the man, he said "You can only be an athlete for a certain part of your life. But you're gonna be a human for the rest of your life. So you work hard to become a better human."

Payton takes responsibility for Saints scandal

METAIRIE, La. (AP) ? Sean Payton apologized Friday for the bounty system under which Saints players were offered payouts for big hits on opponents, saying he takes "full responsibility" for the program that operated for three years under his watch.

"I share and fully support the league's concerns and goals on player safety," the New Orleans coach said in a written statement released by the team. "It is, and should be paramount.

"Respecting our great game and the NFL shield is extremely important to me," Payton added, referring to the league's famous logo.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Wednesday suspended Payton for the 2012 season, effective April 1, one of several unprecedented penalties he issued against the Saints.

Payton said that, as head coach, he should take full responsibility for an operation which the NFL says offered improper cash bonuses for blows that either knocked targeted star players out of the game or left them needing help off the field.

The NFL has said Payton initially lied to NFL investigators about the program, at first denying its existence, and also instructed his defensive assistants to lie. The league also slapped an eight-game suspension on general manager Mickey Loomis and a six-game suspension on assistant head coach Joe Vitt, who also coaches linebackers.

Former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who left the Saints after last season to join the St. Louis Rams, ran the bounty program and has been suspended indefinitely. Goodell also fined the Saints $500,000 and took away second-round draft choices in 2012 and 2013.

The NFL has said the bounty program started in 2009, Williams' first season, when the Saints also won their only Super Bowl. The league also found that the program continued through 2011 even after NFL officials told the Saints to check into it and put a stop to it if they found anything improper was going on.

Payton issued one earlier written apology a few days after the NFL first released the findings of its probe on March 2.

In his latest statement, Payton said the Saints "will implement all necessary protections and protocols, and I will be more vigilant going forward."

Payton, however, won't begin exercising that vigilance until after New Orleans hosts the Super Bowl next February, when his suspension officially ends.

The coach thanked team owner Tom Benson, his players and Saints fans "for their overwhelming support."

Some Saints players have already been in touch with Payton to let him know they are behind him, and starting right tackle Zach Strief said on Friday players "owe it" to their embattled coach to come closer together, live up to the standards he set during the past six seasons and do everything they can to win in his honor while he is away.

"This season is going to take on an us-versus-the-world mentality," Strief said. "The perception at this point is not positive with us. We've worked very hard, I know as players, to gain respect, not only as a good team but as a good group of guys. That perception will go completely out the window now, and I think that'll be kind of a rallying cry for us. It will give us a chance to kind of come together closer than we've ever been and say, 'Look, nobody wants us to even win anymore, and we're going to win for each other, and for coach Payton and Mickey and the guys that essentially took this fall.'"

The NFL has said punishment for players who participated in the bounty program will come later, meaning the Saints could potentially see some defensive regulars suspended as well. The league has said between 22 and 27 players participated in the program, which usually paid hundreds of dollars ? a symbolic gesture relative to the size of NFL contracts ? but sometimes thousands.

The payments were made out of a pool funded by players, coaches and others. Payouts were also awarded for big plays such as forced fumbles, sacks and interceptions, but such compensation is not allowed under the NFL's collective bargaining agreement. The NFL said the pool grew as large as $50,000 during the Saints championship season.

The Saints will have to choose an interim coach, and candidates to take on that role include offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr., defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and offensive line coach Aaron Kromer.

Strief noted that the Saints already had a sampling of what it was like to operate with Payton being less present in the weeks after he broke his leg last season.

"He couldn't get off a (trainer's) table for like three weeks. He wasn't in meetings. He wasn't at practice," Strief said. "There's a tremendous amount of faith in the offensive staff. Even after he came back, I think he really kind of gave a lot more responsibility to the guys that had been doing it. He really kind of said, 'All right, you've been doing it, you're doing a good job, go ahead and keep going.'"

After losing the game in which Payton was injured in Tampa Bay, the Saints finished the regular season 9-1 with Carmichael calling plays into quarterback Drew Brees. The offense set numerous NFL records including for total yards and yards passing.

"Our offensive staff last year really worked very much more independently than they ever had before," Strief said. "So I think in that respect, we're somewhat used to that already."

Strief said Saints veterans have been with Payton long enough now that they know how he likes the structure and tempo of practice, and that they even worked to simulate that during last year's lockout, when Brees gathered players together for offseason workouts at Tulane.

Strief said he visited Payton on Thursday.

"It crushes you to see him and I know it was unexpected for him," Strief said. "For all of us, really, it was completely unexpected.

"When I was hurt last year, for me to watch a game on TV was miserable. I can only imagine what it's going to be like for him," said Strief, who sprained his right knee and missed part of the season. "And I know that for me personally, he will be a big motivating factor in working hard and being a better player because he deserves to have us do that."

Staff from the Cornell Center for Advanced Computing will show users and prospective users how to get their work done with Red Cloud, an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) that runs Eucalyptus, the open source, Amazon-compatible cloud computing platform.

Thinking and Talking About Computer Security
Rick Wash, Michigan State University

In this talk hosted by Information Science, Rick Wash will discuss how computer and information security is a major problem on the Internet today, with frequent reports of break-ins, stolen information, viruses, and identity theft. The security of most computers depends strongly on the ability for non-expert users to make good security decisions. In this talk, Wash will empirically examine where these decisions come from. He will describe a number of different ways (?folk models?) that non-experts use to think about computer security threats, and how these may lead to some successful security decisions and some security vulnerabilities. These ways of thinking spread among communities of non-experts through stories and storytelling. This suggests a way to improve security by shaping the stories that people tell and what stories that people hear; it also suggests links to domains other than security, and in particular healthcare.

Local community leaders weigh in on Florida shooting controversy

Local community leaders and organizations have joined nationwide calls for justice in the wake of the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida on Feb. 16.

Mario Salas, an East Side activist, former city councilman and civil rights leader, said shock turned to indignation that George Zimmerman, who is accused of shooting the unarmed black teen, has yet to be charged. Salas has scheduled a press conference at 9 a.m. March 31 at the Martin Luther King statue at East Houston Street and North New Braunfels Avenue to address the shooting.

?We'll be demanding justice in this case,? Salas said. ?We're concerned about violations of civil rights. We'll be talking about federal justice charges being filed.?

Around the country, the teen's shooting death has sparked outrage and triggered dialogue about racial profiling and the role of race in public safety, self-defense and guns.

While the U.S. Justice Department leaped into the controversy with an investigation of its own, the case drew many Americans into an issue that men of color have to think about every day: driving ? or in Trayvon Martin's case, walking ? while black, said Carey Latimore, a Trinity University assistant professor of history and co-chair of its African American Studies program.

?People have made assumptions of me,? said Latimore, a minister with a doctorate. ?I've gone onto elevators and had people grab on to their bags. I've been followed in stores, and I've never stolen anything in my life.?

?Maybe it's not racism,? he said, ?but it is racial.?

Critics have charged that the accusation that Martin ?looked suspicious? was based on little more than the color of his skin.

But what happened in the Florida case doesn't surprise Latimore. ?That's the sad part,? he said. ?I've seen it. I've felt it. It's painful.?

There isn't any ambiguity or anything that accuses the slain teen of any wrongdoing, said Cary Clack, former San Antonio Express-News columnist.?It's rare that you have a case where it's so blatant that someone is dead who did nothing to be responsible for his death,? Clack said. ?It speaks to our whole issue with race in this nation. If Zimmerman was black, it's still an outrage and if Trayvon was white, it's still an outrage.?

Zimmerman claimed self-defense, which lays the burden of proof on police and prosecutors under Florida's ?Stand Your Ground? law.

The statute is a black eye on the entire country and shouldn't be on the books, said Oliver Hill, president of the San Antonio branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Hill said he always talked to his children about what to do if they were stopped by law enforcement officers.

He advised them to not make certain moves, to let officers know whenever they might reach for something and to treat officers with respect and hopefully they would show them the same respect.

?Trayvon could've been my son,? Hill said. ?It's every parent's nightmare to get a call and learn something has happened to your child.?

He said the nation needs to change the perception that black youth are troublemakers.

Nettie Hinton, an East Side resident who lived through the civil rights movement and took part in protests in Washington D.C., said she thought the nation had moved past these kinds of incidents.

?What's old is new again,? she said. ?And some of that same behavior has been freed to walk the streets again. We're better than that.?

Taj Matthews, who runs the Claude & ZerNona Black Foundation, called the shooting a murder that the police department in Florida ?legitimized as if it gave a stamp of approval to it.?

Matthews said he teaches his kids if somebody does something to tell their parents first, and if they're not around, to defend themselves.

?Self defense means somebody is attacking you or family and you haven't done anything to provoke them,? Matthews said. ?If someone approaches my kids, I'm going to tell them to run or fight back.?

He said he hasn't heard of any recent cases of racial profiling involving local law enforcement.

In 2006 a San Antonio police officer stopped two young black men on Jackson Keller Road. The officer shot one of the men he believed had a handgun, grazing his forehead. The man turned out to have only keys in his hand. The officer said the men matched the description of a robber in the area.

Imam Omar Shakir of Masjid Bilal Islamic community said concerns within the Muslim community revolved around any appearance of injustice or profiling for any human being. After the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, there were several incidents in which Muslims were targeted in San Antonio and around the nation.

?We still have these concerns among law enforcement and other people with a devaluing of human life; to say this element doesn't exist is na?ve,? Shakir said. ?That's the concern; it could happen to me or anyone.? vtdavis@express-news.net

People Sure Do Love Stealing NASA's Laptops [Nasa]

Losing a computer containing unencrypted ISS codes earned NASA a stern talking-to from a House subcommittee but apparently didn't change many attitudes. NASA's just lost another and this time, it contained the personal information of every NASA employee in Kansas City. More »

(AP) ? "CSI" creator Anthony Zuiker is making a movie destined for the small screen.

The creator of the hit CBS television show plans to debut the as-yet-unfinished feature, "Cybergeddon," on Yahoo in installments this fall. His latest foray into online storytelling follows his partnership on a horror series for YouTube.

It also marks Yahoo's second stab at tapping Hollywood talent to create original online video. In January, Yahoo said a series of 20 animated webisodes developed by Tom Hanks called "Electric City" would debut on the site this spring.

Many Web video companies, including Hulu, YouTube and Netflix, are pushing to put more original video content online as they compete for people's attention with traditional outlets like TV channels.

Zuiker and Yahoo consider the online movie debut to be similar to a release in theaters.

"Instead of 5,000 theater screens, you can wake up to 50 million screens in one day," Zuiker says.

Zuiker is the movie's executive producer, but hasn't found a director or actors yet.

Unlike a movie, viewers won't be charged admission. But the movie will come with ads, including ones from the maker of the Norton AntiVirus program, Symantec Corp. The movie's episodes may also be sprinkled through different Yahoo properties such as its finance, news and entertainment sites.

Along with regular video ads, a character playing a Norton employee will have a "small but impactful" role in the movie, Zuiker says.

The plot revolves around a female government agent who has a falling out with the law and is on the run herself, while pursuing a master hacker who wants to bring the world to its cyber-knees.

Yahoo Inc. has been struggling to boost the revenue it gets from advertising as competitors like Google Inc. and Facebook have cut into its display ad business. It is trying especially to go after video advertisements, because advertisers tend to pay more for them than static display ads.

Erin McPherson, Yahoo's head of video, said Yahoo will distinguish itself from sites like YouTube and Hulu by creating more content like games and text to go with the videos on its different services, including perhaps its email and messaging programs.

Yahoo did something similar when it put up stories about the Clinton family around the time it aired the Clinton Foundation's concert online in October.

"If you want to sign up for the 'Cybergeddon' experience, you could be surrounded by this storytelling on the Yahoo digital platform," she said.
