Google Wave reaches zero amplitude

Google Wave reaches zero amplitude

We knew it was coming, but alas, the loss of Google Wave hits us anew now that the execution date has finally come. To say we fully grokked this platform would be untrue, but as we dug through its history to gather our thoughts, we realized what a misunderstood creature Wave really was. Released in 2009 with great fanfare and no shortage of Firefly references, the program meant well with its collaboration-friendly interface, emphasis on multimedia sharing and raft of third-party extensions such as real-time Swedish Chef translation. But while its heart was in the right place, the service sacrificed accessibility for intrigue, a distinct online identity for an early adopter sensibility. Thus, after the invite-only mystique wore off and talk of a Wave app store began to sound downright foolish, the program's future looked anything but rosy. But even a product this short-lived can have a legacy: in Wave's case, it could be making Google Plus seem downright approachable by comparison. And though this may be little consolation to those hardcore wavers -- few and far between as they may be -- the project's spirit will live on in the equally perplexing Apache Wave. RIP, Google Wave, we really hardly knew you.

Social Networking And Gaming Mobile Apps Are Now Neck-And-Neck For Time Spent On Android, iOS

instagram-rankingIn another sign that something fundamental is changing on the iOS and Android platforms, mobile analytics provider Flurry has found that consumers are spending as much time in social networking apps as they are in mobile games. Games have historically led usage on mobile. The last time that Flurry took a look back in January, it found that half of app sessions were spent in games while 30 percent was spent in social networking apps. "We take the rise in Social Networking apps as a signal of maturation for the platform," wrote Flurry's vice president of marketing Peter Farago. "As game demand may be hitting its saturation point, consumers are also discovering other apps, namely Social Networking."

Track Your Facebook Abuse, Bullying, Spam Reports With Transparent New Support Dashboard

Facebook Community SupportFacebook wants you to know it's listening when you report bullying, hate speech, identity theft, and spam, so today it launched a new Support Dashboard for tracking these reports until they're resolved. Users can check to see if their report has been reviewed, be notified of whether the offensive content was removed or left up, and learn why the decision was made. The Support Dashboard is gradually rolling out to the Account Settings menu starting today with Facebook tracking Timeline and photo flags there, and monitoring for more content types will be added soon. Cyberbullying has emerged as huge problem across the Internet and especially on Facebook, where Consumer Reports says one million children were bullied from June 2010-2011. The Support Dashboard should make users feel more confident and safe on the site because they know if they're abused and report it, their problems will actually be heard and responded to.

Day 28 and tree mail brings news of another Reward Challenge. Its the old Consensus Quiz where players must match their answers to what the majority think about other players. For each correct answer, you get to chop one of three ropes holding a ?doll? made up to look like a player. After the third rope is cut, the doll falls into a fire and that player is out. This event usually lets everybody know where they stand in the Tribal Pecking Order. The prize is a picnic for the winner and guests. Needless to say, Troyzan is the [...]
